The Astrology of 'Nothing' - Part 1 of 5: Jerry

I am a big fan of the show “Seinfeld” and I can’t get enough of the syndicated episodes even though it has been off the air for over a decade. I literally cannot go a day without recalling an episode triggered by my daily life experiences. As an astrologer, I am bursting with curiosity as to how the characters’ fictional birth charts may look.

I love to speculate on the planetary configurations of the people I meet when there is a distinct personality trait that stands out. I do a decent job at guessing people’s astrological make-up but most of the time I am incorrect. Ultimately, astrology is just too complex to allow for such simple extrapolations based on a few personality characteristics.

But I thought it would be interesting to at least attempt to sum up the basic astrological make-up of the four main characters (Jerry, Elaine, George, & Kramer) of “Seinfeld”. This analysis is complete conjecture as there is no way of actually knowing the astrological make-up of a set of fictional characters. But over this series of articles (5 parts), I will explore my assessment of the ‘Big Three’ (Sun, Moon, & Ascendant) for each of the four main characters. I will also discuss how these configurations play out in their collective relationship as well as in their individual relationships. For simplicity, I will use the ‘Whole House’ system of astrology.

Enjoy!

Part 1 of 5: Jerry

“How can anybody not like him?” This is a phrase often heard out of the mouth of Helen Seinfeld, Jerry’s mother. Jerry was an only child and the ‘star’ of his family. He then grew up to take the stage. In his adult life, he is the center of attention and everything revolves around his apartment and even around his presence to keep the group together. George and Elaine can hardly come up with things to talk about with each other without Jerry around. And even when Jerry thought that he finally found love (with a character played by Janeane Garofalo) he was really only in love with a woman who was exactly like himself. I think it goes without saying that the character of Jerry has a Leo Sun (Jerry the real-life comedian actually has a Taurus Sun).

But there’s more to this curious, charming, wise-cracking, and freedom-loving character. He seems to make it a point to keep things in his life as light-hearted as possible and to portray himself as a bottomless pit of wit and humor. This is a game that he takes on stage with him as a comedian. It seems to me that Jerry has a Gemini Ascendant which also puts his Sun in the 3rd house of his chart. The combination of a Gemini Ascendant and Sun in the 3rd house yields a character much like I describe at the beginning of this paragraph. This also puts Sagittarius in his 7th house which explains his constant need to play the field and search for the greener grass on the other side of the fence when it comes to relationships.

However, it’s not just his desire for greener pastures that compels him to keep searching in the relationship department. Jerry has almost a talent, or disease, for picking out even the minutest shortcoming or detail of any potential mate. As soon as he feels vulnerable or threatened he immediately puts up an emotional wall and analyzes his partners to death. He is also fastidious, health-conscious (i.e. egg-white omelets only), and he is uncomfortable when his ‘system’ is breaking down. This just screams Virgo Moon to me. And a Virgo Moon would fall in his 4th house of home and comfort. The gang hanging out at Jerry’s apartment seems to have to do with more than just his Leonian ego wanting to be the center of attention. Perhaps he also has an emotional need for this congregation to be occurring in his home?

When we look at all three of these pieces as a whole, the function of his character becomes even clearer. When he’s out in public he’s a charming free-wheeling funnyman. But in his home, there is only one right way to do things and he’s held back by his own emotional need for order (i.e. discomfort with renovations in his home). This tension between his Gemini Ascendant and his Virgo Moon is quite apparent. Also, his relationships are complicated by the fact that he likes to be the center of attention, prefers things to be light-hearted, and needs to know that the woman he is with is perfect for him in order to proceed. Considering that his mother adores him and that he is subconsciously influenced by these memories of being put on a pedestal (Moon in the 4th house), how could anyone really measure up? From his perspective the grass will always be greener on the other side since no one will make him feel about himself the way his mother helps him feel about himself.

Part 2 of 5: Elaine

Part 3 of 5: George

Part 4 of 5: Kramer

Part 5 of 5: Cast Relationships

This assessment is just my personal take on the energies of the “Seinfeld” cast and their interactions. I am sure there are dozens of potential views on these energies. But there is no way to actually prove or disprove my suggestions for these fictional characters.

So what is your take?

  1. Chris, even though I've not watched much Seinfeld, I think you nail Jerry's character! I love the concept of figuring out the astrology of favorite TV icons. Some are so archetypal. (Who would argue that Monk was a Virgo?) Nash Bridges was probably my favorite TV program ever. Don Johnson is, in fact, and played Nash as a Sag to the hilt. Even gave the character a Sag birthday (but shaved some years off his age, LOL!)

TV and movies have so much cultural influence, they are a great way to teach and enhance our knowledge of astrology. Hope you'll do more of this!
